The weekend of the 4th and 5th of February held host to the Athens Kickboxing Challenge in Greece in which Nesta Baxter, a local kickboxer from Evolution Martial Arts based on the Fogarty Site in Boston attended.
Nesta Baxter travelled to Athens in Greece along with Head Coach of Evolution Martial Arts Linda Baxter on Friday the 3rd of February. Upon arrival Nesta weighed in and had her medical check before fuelling up before a busy first day of the competition on the Saturday.
On Saturday the 4th of February Nesta travelled to the arena which was the Olympic Wrestling Arena in Athens, the venue that held the Judo event at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. The Saturday was the day of Light Continuous, Kick Light and Open Weight Grand Championships.
Nesta Baxter, who represents WAKO Team Great Britain at many international kickboxing competitions, started off the day by competing in her first category of Junior Female (16-18yrs) -55kg Light Continuous Kickboxing. Nesta fought brilliantly and had a strong Italian fighter in the final of the category, Nesta showed a great performance winning with a unanimous decision to claim her the first gold for Evolution and Team WAKO Great Britain.
Nesta, 16 years old, then fought in the Senior Female (19yrs+) -55kg Light Continuous Kickboxing where she again performed well and met an Italian in the Final again. Nesta once again had a tough fight in this senior division but came out victorious to claim her second Gold at this International Athens Challenge.
The final category of the day for Nesta was her Kick Light division. For Nesta this would be her first time competing in this discipline of Kick Light internationally and Nesta looked forward to the challenge as it was but was then informed at the competition that the lightest available category was the -65kg division in which Nesta would be giving away 10kg, but Nesta took the challenge regardless! Nesta competed in the Junior Female (16-18yrs) -65kg Kick Light and fought three tough strong fighters. After making it through the preliminary rounds came up against a Greek fighter in the final and after a great performance won by a unanimous decision, taking her third and final gold of the day.
Sunday the 5th of February was the day of Point Fighting at the Athens Challenge 2017.
The first category for Nesta Baxter on the Sunday was the Junior Female (16-18yrs) -55kg Point Fighting. After winning against a good international final in the preliminary rounds, Nesta found herself in the quarter finals against the number one seeded athlete and world champion of her division. Nesta had an absolutely brilliant performance and really put pressure on the current world champion however it was the other fighter who succeeded to the semi finals by a mere two point margin, Nest missing out on a podium position. However Nesta was very happy with this performance and is confident going into the next international tournaments.
Nesta then stepped onto the tatami again for Team GB in the Junior Female (16-18yrs) -60kg Point Fighting section. Nesta fought well and after beating a good Greek fighter in the quarter finals came up against a top class Italian fighter who was one of the best in this division (a weight class above Nesta's own). Nesta fought very well however had to settle for a bronze medal just missing out on a space in the final by 2 points to the eventual winner.
Overall the weekend was a huge success for Nesta, coming back to Boston with an impressive 3x Gold and a Bronze. Nesta will be competing again in 2 weeks time at the WAKO Kickboxing British National Championships where she is looking to retain her British Title from the past 3 years.
